Function of Class IV laser

What is Class IV Laser Therapy?

Class IV Laser stimulates the production of a cellular enzyme called Cytochrome C Oxidase within the mitochondria that produces ATP. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the currency of chemical energy in living cells. This increased production of ATP production speeds up a host of biological responses  such as pain modulation, reduced tissue inflammation, reduction of scar tissue, increased vascular activity, improved cell metabolism, improve nerve function,  and accelerated healing process. This is the photochemical effect of Class IV Laser (High Power Laser Therapy).

Differences Between Cold (Class I, II, III) vs Hot (Class IV) Laser Therapy

There are several different classes of laser therapy that was introduced in 2001. Initially, laser therapy is known as “Cold Laser Therapy” or ” Low Light Level Therapy”. The most significant difference between cold vs hot laser is their maximum power output to deliver a effective therapeutic dose. Cold lasers are only able to treat simple conditions because they can penetrate around 0.5 cm deep into the body while Class IV laser is able to penetrate up to 4 cm and is normally more than 100x more powerful. Since it is able to penetrate deep within the body, the vast majority of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and nerves can be treated effectively.

Class 4 laser therapy has become a standard of care for many musculoskeletal injuries. Laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to create therapeutic effects. The light that is transmitted via the laser helps stimulate certain processes within the body that help provide relief to symptoms include reduction in pain and inflammation, enhanced lymphatic drainage, and increasing the rate of bone repair.
